CHAPTER SIX
WHOEVER that was, she didnât feel like talking to them. Wasnât in the mood to speak to anyone this evening.
With a set face, Clemency ignored the telephone and, reaching up to the kitchen cupboard above her head, retrieved a glass bowl. What was the female equivalent of a misogynist? She extracted a fork from a drawer and slammed it shut. Oh, to hell with Simon. To hell with David. And to hell with Joshua Harrington.
The anger evaporated as suddenly as it had ignited. Simon belonged to the past, had long ceased to matter enough to hurt her. And David... Oh, poor David. Heâd still looked so hangdog when heâd left this afternoon. Sheâd call him in a day or two, she decided.
Gingerly she moved across the tiled floor and reached into the fridge for a box of eggs. And she had no justification at all for adding Joshuaâs name to the roll call in the first place. He hadnât lied to her, or betrayed her. He was just responsible for the fact that she was almost too stiff to walk this evening.
Her mouth began to curve involuntarily. This morning had been fun, she mused wistfully. Her smile stiffened. It hadnât been quite so much fun seeing Joshua with Anna, though, had it?
Abruptly, she replaced the box of eggs in the fridge, the thought of an omelette suddenly as unappetising as had seemed her half-eaten sandwich at lunch-time.
âClemency?â
She whirled round as a shadow fell over the kitchen, the evening sunshine blocked by the towering figure standing on the threshold of the open back door.
âFor Peteâs sake, Joshua, why canât you ever knock?â He was the last person she felt like seeing.
âIâm sorry if I startled you,â he said quietly, moving uninvited into the kitchen, âBut I assumed you were in the garden. Didnât you hear the telephone?â
She didnât answer him, registering the lines of tension etched into his face for the first time, the unmistakable anxiety in his dark eyes. âWhatâs the matter?â she said swiftly.
âJamie has suspected appendicitis,â he said without preamble. âThe doctorâs ordered an ambulance which should be here very soon.â
âAnd youâd like me to mind Tommy while you go to the hospital,â Clemency said quietly, already moving across the room to close the window and lock the back door.
âHe was complaining of a stomach ache when I met him from school.â Joshua followed her down the hall and out the front door. âI should have taken it more seriously straight away, but he seemed to forget all about it with the excitement of the kitten. Key?â he reminded her just before she turned to slam the door.
âIn my pocket,â she assured him, patting her jeans, the brief smile touching his lips as he looked down at her, relieving the strain in his eyes. But only momentarily.
âHeâs so little,â he muttered gruffly, and for a second his guard slipped, the strong face completely stripped of its habitual assurance. Then abruptly he swung away on down the drive, Clemency doing her level best to keep up with his rapid, urgent strides.
